Cooking

Eating on outdoor trips, as well as at home, provides our bodies with the fuel they need. The process of cooking and eating takes on some special meaning in the outdoors as it encourages camaraderie, and often offers one of the few times when everyone comes together for a while. Preparing food in the backcountry is not magically different than at home, but there are some additional considerations that need to be taken into account. To effectively prepare food in the wilderness, you should be familiar with:

  • Menu Planning
    • Meals, desserts, snacks
    • Nutrition
    • Calories
    • Food preservation
    • Packing
  • Outdoor kitchen
    • Sanitation and safety
    • Camp stoves
    • Cooking fire
    • Leave No Trace
  • Cooking methods
    • Dehydrated food + hot water
    • On a stick over the fire
    • Foil in the fire
    • Dutch oven baking
    • Grilling
    • Camp stove cooking

I would assume that a experienced outdoors-person could prepare the following on their own, without a recipe, given the proper materials:

  • Pancakes
  • Oatmeal
  • Hot dog
  • Spaghetti
  • Meat loaf
  • Basic soup/chili
  • Grilled meat
